Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty was one of the surprises of E3. The new game will be downloadable for the PS Store, though it doesn’t need Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction to run! Quest for Booty is not a real sequel for Tools of Destruction, but you will start off from where Toold of Destruction left off, the mystery of Clank!
The idea of getting Ratchet and Clank to PSN is because Insomniac wanted to combine Ratchet and Clank with PS3’s network. Insomniac liked the idea of smaller games at a smaller price but it still has the high values of TOD. Putting Quest for Booty on PSN, people would be introduced to the Ratchet and Clank series whilst revealing what happened to Clank!
Without Clank, the gameplay is a little more difficult, as ratchet looses lots of his abilities. He looses abiliteies as gliding, jump faster etc. In the game you would be faced with a small pole to walk over. If Ratchet had Clank, he would glide over it and pass the task easily. Even though the lack of abilities reduced without Clank, Ratchet has given new abilities with his wrench. His wrench can extend to catch distant objects. Another new ability is Ratchet grabing and throwing things with his wrench. Ratchet can pick up “Heli-Grubs”, creaters wich light up in dark places, so Ratchet can walk his way through dark caves.
As said before, the goal is to find more about Clank, who was abducted by the Zoni in the end of Tools of Destruction. Without spoiling anything, the game will have a very un-expected ending.
The engine is very close to that one of Tools of Destruction, thoug it has been enchanced a little. Insomniac have worked on getting the most out of their engine, like making the best to create shodows, dynamic lights and so on wich are used by Ratchets new wrench features.
Some on the main people like Rusty Pete and Captain Slag will be featured in Quest for Booty. A new pirate will be introduced, with the name of Angstrom Darkwater. He is a new character with special twists that makes him stand out form other pirates. Regarding locations, all missions will be on one plane, named Merdegraw, a heaven for pirate invasions!
As this game is a smaller game, Insomniac can polish out well each section of the game. On larger games, some parts can really be messed up, but in Quest for Booty, every part will be a rich experiance.
Unluckily, Quest for Booty will not support trophies, as the trophies update came too late for the developers to include them, but this is the last Insomniac game not to include trophies, as all future Insomniac games will have trophies incorporated, including Resistance 2!
There isn’t lots of content in the game, as Insomniac wanted it to look like a Blockbuster movie, but longer. So Quest for Booty qwill take around 3-4 hours for an average gamer to complete!
Even though it won’t be a long game, Insomniac has introduced soem unlockables. The unlockables are secret weapon mods. that people can find to upgrade weapons. There will also be a couple of hidden easter eggs, wich everyone will appriciate.
Currantly, stand-alone game are more appealing to us, with Quest for Booty taking about 6 months to be developed with a very small team. Doing Quest for Booty was a fun challenge says Brian Allgeier and there is a possibility that more will be done, but Insomnic are also interested in creating full scale games, such as Resistance 2!
One last thing and for some the most important, when will the game be released, and how much will it cost? The game will be released on PS Store Augest 21 2008, at only $14.99!
